The Egyptian Medical Society and the Coptic Medical Society had a very successful celebration of the New Year on Sunday 12/1/2014.
Eighty-three people attended, twenty of whom were members of the Coptic Medical Society. We all had a fantastic meal at Maroush Restaurant, Oxford Street.
We celebrated Sir Magdy Yacoub’s Order of Merit award. Only twenty-four people are granted this special honour at any one time. Previous holders of this prestigious title include Mother Teresa, Florence Nightingale and Winston Churchill.
Various speeches were given throughout the course of the evening: a vote of thanks from Mo Latif, President of the Egyptian Medical Society, who also wished all the Coptic friends a happy Coptic Christmas; Sally El Ghazali talked about the role of the young members, a speech which was warmly applauded; and Nabil Raphael talked about modes of cooperation between the two societies.
Bishop Angaelos also addressed those gathered “with his lovely words”, as Mo Latif commented. He prayed for a better future for Egypt. He wished all our Muslim friends a happy Prophet’s birthday.
The evening was rounded off with a presentation on the events of the upcoming year, presented by Khaled El Ghazali, the Egyptian Medical Society’s secretary. He looked forward to seeing as many people as possible in future meetings.
All in all, an excellent event!
